How can we leverage AI Tools in specification writing? The critical point for a specifier using AI is based on the supposition that we can get the most out of AI when we use it as a tool inserted into the human process - a digital assistant and critically-thinking thought partner rather than a digital slave designed to do our bidding. For a specifier using AI, that means a human is driving the conversation, evaluating input, asking additional questions, and then seeking additional human input from subject matter experts more versed in each category where the specifier wants to test and back-check the output before attempting to share it or claim it as true.

This series studies some ways that we can begin to bridge the knowledge gap between design, manufacturing, and the built environment and then teach other humans enough for them to make intelligent and well-educated decisions that require judgement. As long as construction projects remain a series of legally binding contracts designed to meet minimum life safety standards in a way that protects the health, safety, and welfare of the building occupants in addition to the building as an asset, humans remain necessary leaders in how AI tools are used and integrated into the design process.
